Inner city residents applauded the Land and
Environment Court’s decision to uphold the City of Sydney’s
decision to reject the building of two 6-storey apartment blocks overshadowing
St John’s Church in Darlinghurst. The community group, Save Our
St John’s (Darlinghurst) welcomed the court’s decision, delivered
on 22 December, to protect the 150 year old landmark church and grounds.

SOSJ SUPPORTS SOUTH SYDNEY COUNCIL’S CALL FOR PUBLIC OPEN SPACE
The Church refused permission for a public meeting to be held in the Church
Hall. At a meeting at the Stables Theatre on 29 May, South Sydney Councillors
proposed a long term lease of the open space

SOUTH SYDNEY COUNCIL CALLS FOR PUBLIC OPEN SPACE
SSCC resolved to write to City of Sydney Council supporting the call for
a public park on the school site (by lease or State acquisition) on 26
March. SOSJ and Clover Moore MP added their support and wrote to City
of Sydney Council.
South Sydney Council rejected the Masterplan. They believe the boundaries
transfer meant the DA should be re-advertised. They called on City of

FEBRUARY 2002
In February 2002 the State Government acquired Ballast Point in inner-city
Balmain under the Land Acquisition Act to be decontaminated and turned
into parkland. Darlinghurst residents call for the St Johns service station
site to be remediated and restored to community use as a parkland.
